ChasePay: UI Motion Design
From early 2016 through the 2017 holiday season, I worked as a Senior Motion Designer on the Chase Pay app, joining Chase’s incredible internal design team. I collaborated closely with UX researchers, content strategists, and product managers to integrate motion across key user flows, including Sign In, Cards & Payments, Pay at Pump, Order Ahead, and Redeem Rewards.
Pushing Mobile Motion Forward
At the time, implementing meaningful motion in mobile apps was still relatively new—beyond basic fades and slide-ins. Our team wanted to push those boundaries. While we used After Effects for design, tools like Lottie were still in their infancy, so a big part of the process involved working with developers to translate animations into functional prototypes in an efficient and accurate way.
Motion Informed by Research
User research and merchant interviews played a major role in shaping our motion approach. At a time when digital wallets were still gaining traction, we focused on designing interactions that felt intuitive, trustworthy, and rewarding. Our motion design helped guide users through complex flows, highlight incentives (like Offers and Order Ahead), and reinforce clarity in navigation—especially when features like nearby merchant search and location maps were introduced.
One transition we spent a significant amount of time refining was the user interaction after tapping the “Pay” button. We aimed to create a moment of visual delight while also providing clear feedback and signaling a shift into the dedicated “Paying” environment. This was achieved through a subtle but intentional color transition—from the blue button to a green top bar—during the animation.

Broader Impact
Although Chase Pay ultimately didn’t achieve wide adoption and was discontinued in 2021, the project allowed the digital design team to experiment and evolve Chase’s broader design language—especially outside of traditional fintech conventions. For me, it was a great opportunity to explore how thoughtful motion could enhance user trust and product usability in a fast-moving, iterative environment.
